Community consultation forms an important part of the environmental assessment process.
In order to gain input from the community the following initiatives were taken:
- A project information line was established to allow members of the community to speak with members of the project team;
- Four newsletters were prepared and distributed to community members to provide information about project developments;
- An advertisment was placed in the South Coast Register during the initial stages of the project to announce the proposal and commencement of studies; and
- The 2006 environmental assessment report and the environmental assessment prepared in 2008 for the 2nd stage of the project were placed on display.
Further details on the consultation activities are provided in Chapter 4 of the 2006 environmental assessment (part A).
A fourth community newsletter was distributed in April 2008. This newsletter provides details on the public exhibition of the environmental assessment of the proposed Stage 2. As with the first three newsletters, it was distributed to households in close proximity to the site.
Copies of all the project newsletters can be downloaded here: Newsletter 1, August 2005 (186KB) Newsletter 2, November 2005 (90KB) Newsletter 3, May 2006 (594KB) Newsletter 4, April 2008 (147KB)
A summary brochure, which provided an overview of the Environmental Assessment for Stage One, was distributed to everyone who registered to be on the project mailing list.
Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the proposal.
The main issues raised by the community related to concerns about air quality, noise, visual impact, flora and fauna, water quality and drainage, hazards and safety and impact on property values and further urban expansion.
These issues are summarised in the second newsletter. Statutory authorities such as Shoalhaven City Council, NSW Rural Fire Service, National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Roads & Traffic Authority were also consulted. The issues raised during the consultation period by the community and statutory authorities were addressed in the Environmental Assessment.
During the period of public exhibition stakeholders have another opportunity to comment on the proposal and the findings of the environmental assessment.
The Environmental Assessment report for Stagge 2 is on exhibition betweeen 16 April and 19 May 2008. See Environmental Assessment section of this website.
